Nils Kappeyne, Shell
VP Architecture, Platforms & Data
Nils Kappayne is an energy and IT expert with over 25 years of experience in (senior) IT management roles. In July 2020, Nils was named Vice President for DIY Software Development at Shell IT International in The Hague. He launched an initiative across Shell's businesses to democratise digital and empower employees to collaborate on bespoke digital solutions that support Powering Progress, the company's strategy to accelerate the transition to net-zero emissions. In August 2021, Nils was appointed Vice President for Architecture, Platforms & Data, reporting to Shell Group CIO Jay Crotts and driving Shell's accelerated digital and energy transformation.
Businesses will find new ways to meet their customers' needs as long as the world is digitised. Strong data foundation, architecture, and democratisation of digital skills across the workforce are required for a successful digital transformation in the energy sector. With this conviction, Shell launched the "Do It Yourself" citizen software development programme last year. Through the programme, Shell hopes to encourage its employees to utilise data and create software applications to improve their day-to-day business problems. Without prior experience with coding, employees can build their own applications using low-code or no-code solutions. How do you create such a “digital-for-all” culture? What are the benefits but also potential pitfalls?
