Karin Middelburg, Philips
Vice President Human Resources Europe
Karin Middelburg has been working as an international Human Resources professional for over 25 years. After holding several positions in Asia and Europe, she works at Philips since 2017, and since the summer of 2023, she is the VP HR Europe.
For Philips, employee centricity is a key point in its HR strategy. In early 2023, Philips faced a significant cost saving challenge, possibly affecting over 8000 positions around the globe. Philips in the Netherlands started an initiative for impacted employees with their ‘from work-to-work’ trajectory. This was designed to go beyond the traditional aspects of employee support and ensure the fastest way for people to become employed elsewhere again. Philips co-created a platform connecting its employees with recruiters from various companies, especially but not exclusively, from the Brainport region. The Central Social Plan also had other aspects in it ranging from financial information sessions to training and coaching support. To do so, strong stakeholder management was needed to collaborate with work councils and trade unions. Besides, it was a challenge to communicate the right messages at the right time to employees.

She explains the main goals and shows her efforts to get sustainability in the organisation’s DNA and its way of working. Furthermore, she will talk about the role of employees, how to motivate them, and how to capture their innovative power. She does this by demonstrating the ‘Infinity Program’ in which teams compete for the best sustainable solution or process by collective impact, cascaded empowerment and orchestrated engagement. This has led to, for example, a more circular waste stream and cost reduction.
