Smart Industry Network Netherlands | Implementing Smart industry according to AkzoNobel

Every player in the manufacturing, energy, utilities, offshore & construction industry struggles to decide which new technologies should be implemented. Buzzwords shape the discussion, but an overlapping strategy is often absent. A complete greenfield approach to the digitalization of the manufacturing process is often impossible due to financial constraints, instead, most companies focus on incremental improvement and occasional larger migrations. During this Vision Dinner, AkzoNobel will share the insight collected in its most advanced and sustainable paint plant in Ashington in the UK and its approach to digitalization in older manufacturing plants.

Stuart Rae, Advanced Manufacturing Technology Director at AkzoNobel

Stuart Rae will start the evening by showing the most advanced and sustainable paint plant of AkzoNobel in Ashington, in the UK. The Ashington plant uses a variety of renewable energy sources, including photovoltaic cells and a biomass boiler, alongside a highly automated manufacturing process which saves water, waste and energy. The factory reduced the carbon footprint per litre of paint by 50% compared with the production facilities at the plants it is replacing. The factory doubled AkzoNobel’s current UK production levels to 200 million litres a year –enough paint to redecorate every living room, bathroom and kitchen in the UK.

After showing the potential of the new (digital) production plant Stuart will shift its attention to the existing manufacturing sites of AkzoNobel. The digitalization of these plants according to Stuart is mainly aimed at performance management (the real-time capturing and visualization of data) and the digitalization of quality control activities. He will then show how new digital capabilities in existing sites can improve the overall output and quality of the paint.
